Culture
Cultural Patterns and Processes
1. Lingua Franca
Sweden does have a lingua franca and it is English, although some linguists believe that English is becoming less efficient for the lingua franca. It seems that Chinese and Arabic are new candidates for the lingua franca. English is also being decided to be either a foreign language or be a second language. Almost 90% of the population can speak English as a second language, so it is being decided if English is either the second language or a foreign language, along with being the lingua franca.
2. Diffusion
Geographic maps can illustrate diffusion of culture by showing where different religions are diffused to and how they are diffused. You can look at different ways that a religion is diffused from the hearth and how as you get farther from the hearth, you see that the religion may be different in some areas than it is at the hearth.
Landscapes can impact language diffusion depending on where the place is, and what it does. A costal city is more likely to have a lingua franca that everyone knows, because they use ports and trade a lot more than your land- locked cities. The cultural hearth of a language is very important because if that country starts to die out, than that language will die out with it. Some places have started using other languages other than their native language. So, a cultural hearth can impact a language in many ways.

Push and Pull Factors
1. Push Factors:
Some reasons that people left Sweden is from persecution, fear, natural disasters, poverty, and unemployment. In the 1850's to 1939 over 1.5 million native Swedes left Sweden due to poverty and starvation. This lead to a lot of emigration to the United States of America. Also, Sweden's population is rising due to a high birth rate and low death rate. This will cause starvation and over population in areas. There would also be a lot of economic strain on the people of Sweden.
2. Pull Factors:
The reasons why people wanted to move to Sweden were because Sweden had a rising labor demand, and real good paying wages. If there was a lot of unemployment of there own country, than they could move to Sweden and have a stable job to support themselves and family. This was a great opportunity for women in the workforce. Women made up more than 50 percent of the immigration rates, Sweden needed people willing to work, and women were there and they wanted to work during 1945 through 1960. Women still are a big part of the workforce today, all of the people that immigrated there in the 60's created a family and started a life there in Sweden.
